This is a foundational cultural course for undergraduate students majoring in Chinese, designed for undergraduates with intermediate to advanced Chinese proficiency and delivered in the fifth semester. Centering on basic cultural concepts, tangible material folk customs, and fundamental cultural differences in daily communication, the course adopts *Chinese Culture and Intercultural Communication* (Wang Hui, The Commercial Press) as its sole core textbook. Teaching is organized by breaking down the textbook into modules: introduction, daily material folk customs, and basic communicative culture. Bilingual cases drawn from local North African life, campus settings and folk customs are incorporated to support learning, consolidating learners’ Chinese proficiency while building their basic cultural awareness.
The course mainly employs close reading of texts, discussions of real-life cases, and appreciation of cultural materials. It compares surface-level cultural differences between China and Algeria in food, festivals, etiquette, colours and numbers, helping international students eliminate fundamental misconceptions in intercultural communication and grasp basic logic for cross-cultural interaction. It lays a foundation for subsequent courses including *Chinese Culture and Intercultural Communication II*, Chinese-Arabic translation, and practical Chinese for international contexts.
Tailored to the teaching context of Chinese departments in North Africa, the course simplifies abstract humanistic theories. Rooted in everyday communication scenarios and concrete folk customs, it supports the accumulation of professional Chinese vocabulary and fosters awareness of cultural inclusiveness.
